States that legalize medical marijuana typically do so with the aim of cannabis relieving specific symptoms and disorders –PTSD, intractable epilepsy, chronic pain. However, a recent study suggests that medical cannabis legalization comes with an additional unintentional impact. It is making workplaces safer.

How Can Legalizing Marijuana Could Make Work Places Safer?

According to the new study, states that legalized medical cannabis found a drop in workplace fatalities among young mature workers. “Legalizing medical marijuana has been correlated with a 19.5% reduction in the anticipated number of workplace fatalities among employees aged 25–44,” the study found.

The analysis was published last year in the International Journal of Drug Policy by economists from Montana State University, University of Colorado, and American University. Their aim was to understand the impact between serious workplace injuries in countries that adopted medical marijuana legalization by analyzing data available from the Bureau of Labor Statistics, focusing on the years between 1992-2015.

Employees Using Cannabis Instead Of More Harmful Drugs

This drop may be from workers using medical cannabis rather than more harmful drugs like alcohol and opioids. In line with this study’s authors, “since using alcohol at work is related to a substantial increase in the risk of injury, and since non-habitual opioid use slows reflexes and impairs cognitive function, the enactment of MMLs [medical marijuana laws] can, in theory, make workplaces safer.”

Significant Research Still Needed

It’s important to keep in mind that correlation doesn’t necessarily mean causation. In addition, Researchers were eager to mention that BLS datasets are rendered state by state, meaning it is not possible to pinpoint any extenuating factors around the office fatalities. Still, it’s significant research that shows the chances around medical marijuana are somewhat more positive than negative.
